Are we ready to move beyond the Hunter concept?

When we picture the ideal Business Development Manager, the word hunter often comes to mind. No one really knows where the concept originated, but it has become firmly established in the language of sales and business development.

The ideal hunter is typically someone who:

  • proactively pursues new customers
  • is willing and confident enough to pick up the phone and call prospects
  • is strongly focused on closing deals

But is the hunter concept becoming outdated? Not when the role is supported by a genuine business development culture.

A Business Development Manager can only be as successful as the organisation he is working at. Today, identifying and converting new opportunities is, above all, a team effort.

Business Development as a Team Effort

Winning new business depends on different skills, disciplines and people working together across the organisation.

Here are a few essential building blocks for creating a strong, team-based approach to business development:

  • Brand awareness: Building recognition and trust is essential. This is not the sole responsibility of the Business Development Manager; it requires input from marketing to senior management. A strong brand and clear positioning helps opening doors and starting conversations.
  • Webinars, seminars and networking events: Events provide valuable opportunities to build trust, strengthen relationships and demonstrate expertise. Together, these activities help present a dynamic and credible image of the company.
  • Business cases: Developing compelling business cases as a team brings together technical, commercial and operational perspectives, providing powerful support for business development.

Business development therefore becomes an ongoing, collaborative process: spotting opportunities, shaping proposals, generating leads, organising events, creating content and turning ideas into action. It becomes a shared responsibility.

The Business Developer’s Role Within the Team

The Business Development Managers remain the key link. They are often the first point of contact and the driving force behind the search for new opportunities. But without strong branding, effective marketing, engaging events and shared subject-matter expertise, even the best hunter has little ammunition. Success comes from bringing all these elements together.

Our conclusion? Go Further Together

The hunter may lead from the front, but sustainable growth is difficult to achieve without the support of the wider team.

As the saying goes, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
